Rental Homes Heerlen

Heerlen is a city in the southeast of Limburg. In 2019, the city had about 86,000 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest municipality in Limburg. Heerlen's administration is divided into four districts: Heerlen-Stad, Heerlerheide, Heerlerbaan, and Hoensbroek. Since 2002, these districts have had their own place name signs again. These districts are divided into different neighbourhoods, and alongside the neighbourhoods, there are 14 hamlets in the municipality of Heerlen. Heerlen is a city rich in culture as its history dates back to the Roman times when they established a settlement there. Since then, the settlement has grown into a vibrant city.

Sights in Heerlen

Once you live in Heerlen, you'll naturally want to enjoy some leisure activities, and fortunately, Heerlen offers many sights worth visiting without having to leave the city. As mentioned earlier, Heerlen has a rich history. The city's habitation history began when the Romans established a military settlement there. Until the nineteenth century, agriculture was the primary source of livelihood. This changed in 1896 when a railway line was constructed through Heerlen for the coal industry. With the railway's arrival, three mines opened in Heerlen. The mines' establishment caused the small village of Heerlen to grow rapidly, necessitating new facilities like schools and hospitals. Due to this growth, there are few historical buildings left, as many were demolished to make way for new buildings needed by the city. Consequently, there are few buildings in the city that reflect Heerlen's coal mining past. Only the shaft building of the Oranje-Nassau I mine is a notable remnant. For a city with such an extensive history, there are unfortunately not many historical buildings or places to visit. However, the shaft building now houses a museum that provides information about Heerlen's coal and mining history. Two other notable museums are the Schunck Glaspaleis and the Thermenmuseum. The Schunck Glaspaleis is a library, music school, dance school, and museum all in one. The museum (as the name suggests) is located in the Glaspaleis designed by Frits Peutz. In the museum, you'll find a large collection featuring exhibitions of contemporary visual art, architecture, and the Schunck collection full of modern art. The museum's collection is focused on urban experience. In the third museum, the Thermenmuseum, you can learn more about the history of the Roman settlement. You can view remains of the bathhouse founded in the city. The museum has a collection of artefacts from Roman times and there are also various rotating exhibitions.

Another historical building worth visiting is Hoensbroek Castle. This castle is one of the largest in the Netherlands and one of the best-preserved castles in Europe. When you visit the castle, you can learn more about the history of its inhabitants, its construction history, the castle's historical significance, and view a large collection of items from the deceased castle residents. The castle is popular with both adults and children as it hosts activities and events for all ages.

Would you prefer something unrelated to the city's history? Thankfully, Heerlen has a cinema, theatre, and concert hall where you can enjoy a great night of entertainment. If you'd rather escape the city life for a bit and venture out for a walk or to enjoy nature and relax, you can visit one of the forests or heathlands surrounding Heerlen. The Brunssummerheide is a nature reserve north of Heerlen. The reserve is very diverse, with deciduous forest, sand plains, heath, and fen. South of Heerlen lies the Imstenraderbos, another nature monument where you can unwind in various ways. You can walk, cycle, or have a picnic here. As you can see, there's more than enough to discover and experience in Heerlen!
