About Oegstgeest
Oegstgeest is a town and municipality in South Holland, with around 24,000 residents. Oegstgeest borders Leiden and Katwijk. The name Oegstgeest is derived from geestgronden, which is dune sand mixed with clay or peat brought in from elsewhere. Not much of those geestgronden remain because they were dug up in the seventeenth century to be used for the expansion of Leiden.
Oegstgeest is one of the earliest inhabited parts of the coastal region. However, it is not entirely clear how many people lived in the settlement until the tenth century. From the eleventh to the fourteenth century, Oegstgeest experienced a period of advancement, which was soon interrupted by the rise of Leiden. It wasn't until the nineteenth century that Oegstgeest became one single place. Before that, the area that is now Oegstgeest consisted of separate nuclei, with little development between them. It was only when these intervening areas were developed from 1900 that Oegstgeest became a whole.
