In Terneuzen, you can see notable differences between the neighbourhoods, making one neighbourhood possibly better suited to your budget, style, and family composition than another. Terneuzen has the following 11 neighbourhoods: Binnenstad – Java, Lievenspolder, Triniteit, Oude Vaart, Driewegen, Noordpolder, Zuidpolder, Serlippens, Oudelandse Hoeve, Zeldenrust, and Otheense kreek. We have outlined the characteristics of these neighbourhoods for you. Let's start with Binnenstad – Java, also known as the centre of Terneuzen. It is noteworthy that the centre of Terneuzen is not located in the middle of Terneuzen. The city centre is situated along the Scheldt, actually forming the northwestern part of Terneuzen. The other neighbourhoods are mostly built to the south and east of the city centre. In the centre, you'll find De Grote Markt, where many terraces and restaurants are located. The centre includes the Scheldeboulevard, allowing you, with a bit of luck, to enjoy a beautiful view over the Scheldt if you rent a house in the city centre. The city centre is also the most historic part of the city, with many beautiful old buildings. However, the city centre is not densely populated, but if you find a home there, it's definitely worth living in.

The neighbourhoods of Lievenspolder, Triniteit, Oude Vaart, and Driewegen are located respectively from North to South on the west side of Terneuzen and thus flow into one another. Through the middle of Lievenspolder runs the Axelsestraat, an important shopping street for Terneuzen’s inhabitants. The neighbourhood is densely built around this street, with some parts still fairly old, while many houses have been renovated. Consequently, there is little space for public green areas. Despite the lack of greenery, there are plenty of facilities, such as shops and schools. Triniteit's architecture traces back to the 60s. Slightly more playgrounds and green spaces are found in this neighbourhood. The types of houses here are mainly semi-detached and detached villas. Further south, you reach Oude Vaart, home to a large sports complex. This neighbourhood dates from the 80s and, unlike the previous two, features much more public greenery, playgrounds, water surfaces, and fields. Terneuzen’s only secondary school, the Lodewijkcollege, is located in this neighbourhood. The last neighbourhood on the west side of Terneuzen, Driewegen, is sparsely populated and is primarily overrun by businesses. A few small farms and houses can still be found here.

The three neighbourhoods of Noordpolder, Zuidpolder, and Serlippens are centrally located in Terneuzen on the side of the Westerschelde. Noordpolder is partly pre-war and partly built in the 70s. Many flats are found here, along with a special primary education facility. Zuidpolder has a similar character, but there is also a large sports park located here. You find many more facilities in terms of shopping centres as well. A large shopping centre called ‘Zuidpolder’ is established, featuring diverse supermarkets, bakeries, drugstores, phone shops, and clothing stores. The last neighbourhood, Serlippens, is characterised by wild gardens. In this neighbourhood, nature can take its course, leading to beautiful green fields. Flats are also established here, offering numerous apartments with spectacular views over the water.

The two neighbourhoods of Oudelandse Hoeve and Zeldenrust are situated south of the city. Oudelandse Hoeve and Zeldenrust are characterised by good neighbourhood facilities like schools, a gym, a petting farm, and the hospital. These neighbourhoods have a very open environment and good living quality. You can find both terraced houses and detached homes here, with many families residing in these neighbourhoods.

Last but not least: de Otheense kreek. In the eastern part of Terneuzen lies the Otheense kreek, where numerous playgrounds and beautiful walking routes can be found. You can enjoy lovely walks or bike rides here towards the polder, the boulevard, or large lakes. Othene is a newly built neighbourhood where many families with children live. This neighbourhood has its own primary school and supermarket. There are also large playgrounds and sports equipment.
