Noordwijk is a village and municipality in South Holland. The village has approximately 42,800 residents. The village stretches along the North Sea coast. The municipality of Noordwijk consists of four centers that emerged after the village merged with the municipality of Noorderwijkhout. These centers are Noordwijk aan Zee, Noordwijk-Binnen, Noordwijkerhout, and De Zilk. First, there's the center Noordwijk aan Zee, a seaside resort with a long coastline. Fishing was the primary source of income in Noordwijk aan Zee until the early 19th century. Gradually, the village shifted its focus to tourism, now being the main economic driver. More than 1 million people spend the night in Noordwijk aan Zee each year. Then there's Noordwijk-Binnen, the old center of the village, known for its bulb cultivation. Along with surrounding municipalities, Noordwijk-Binnen forms the Bulb Region. Noordwijkerhout is a former municipality and now a core of Noordwijk, and De Zilk is also a former municipality and now a core.
Noordwijk has an interesting history with some noteworthy events. Noordwijk-Binnen originated as a settlement for fishermen, around 1200. Noordwijk was once a city with city rights, but that was short-lived. In 1398, the place received city rights, and in 1399 these were revoked because the applicants were not entitled to request city rights. In 1429, Noordwijk was elevated to a pilgrimage site, but this was also not a permanent title. In 1450, a large fire broke out in Noordwijk, destroying the church. In the 16th century, Noordwijk ceased to be a pilgrimage site, due to the Reformation.

Most Dutch people will primarily think of the beach and the Space Expo when they think of Noordwijk. Located along the 13 km long dune belt, the village attracts a lot of tourists, not only in the summer but also in the autumn and spring. Moreover, Noordwijk is home to ESTEC, a European space research and technology center. The visitors’ center is the Space Expo, a permanent space exhibition. As a tourist-oriented municipality, Noordwijk hosts many events. Each year, the Flower Parade of the Bulb Region starts in Noordwijk and heads to Haarlem, attracting a lot of attention. The Noordwijk Painting Festival is organized every year in June, there’s the summer festival Opera by the Sea annually, and several small festivals are organized by Poppodium Noordwijk, such as Jobpop and Tuinpop.
Since Noordwijk borders the dunes almost entirely from north to south, there are many activities around the beach and dunes to engage in. In the summer, you can swim and sunbathe on the beach and go for walks. The European walking route E9 goes right through Noordwijk, a route that follows the coastline from Portugal to the Baltic states. Beach walks are also a fun activity in winter if it’s not too windy. In Noordwijk, you can also take walks through other nature parks apart from the dunes. The Kachelduin Nature Reserve, De Blink, and Het Langeveld are located in and around Noordwijk.
