First, there's the district 'North', which includes the neighborhoods North, Hasseler Es, and Slangenbeek. The North and Hasseler Es neighborhoods are characterized by a peaceful environment and a diverse population, with young couples, large families, and seniors. There are many facilities available, such as eateries, sports fields, and playgrounds. Slangenbeek is a new and expanding neighborhood, featuring many family homes, including detached and semi-detached houses.
Then we have the district 'Middle'. This district comprises the city center, the hamlet of Woolde, and the neighborhood Hengelose Es. The center is not densely populated, as it mainly accommodates shopping centers and dining venues. The city center is also notable for its historic buildings. There aren't many standalone houses for rent here, but you can find many apartments and rooms. Not so appealing for families, but great for students or singles! Additionally, there's the hamlet of Woolde, located west of the center, blending into the countryside. It's a serene area with ample care and living facilities. It's rich in nature and primarily features new-build homes. This hamlet mainly hosts many families and seniors. The last part of this team of neighborhoods is Hengelose Es. Situated north of the center, it's one of the larger districts in Hengelo. The homes here were primarily built between 1900-1950, with flats added in the 60s. Unlike Woolde and the center, this area is densely populated, with many families, six primary schools, secondary education, and a Pabo college nearby.
The south houses the three neighborhoods of Wilderinkshoek, Berflo Es, and Groot Driene. The rural area here also includes the village of Beckum and the hamlet of Oele. From Groot Driene and Berflo Es, it's a quick trip to the University of Twente. These neighborhoods are located on the city's edge, offering quick access outside the city. They're surrounded by many meadows and woods. The Wilderinkshoek neighborhood primarily features historic pre-war houses. The other two neighborhoods offer early post-war homes and properties from the 70s.
Attractions in Hengelo
Hengelo offers attractions and activities for all ages. If you move here, you'll never be bored! One of Hengelo's highlights is the Twickel estate. While not entirely within the city, it lies just west of the municipality. Twickel is a stunning estate with a historic castle and breathtaking gardens. Hengelo is home to the play paradise Bengeltjes Speeldorp and Family Amusement Park de Waarbeek. Bengeltjes Speeldorp is the largest indoor playground in the Netherlands, set in an old machine factory providing ample space. Whether you have toddlers or teens, there's something for everyone here. Family Park de Waarbeek is enjoyable for all ages! With about 30 rides and play equipment, it's the perfect day out. Plus, you can grab a bite to eat there.
Hengelo also doesn't fall short when it comes to cultural exploration. There are three cultural towers to visit: the old water tower, the town hall tower, and the Weusthag lookout tower.
