About Arnhem

Rental Properties Arnhem

Arnhem is a city and municipality in the east of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of Gelderland. The city lies along the rivers Nederrijn, IJssel and Sint-Jansbeek, with neighbourhoods on both sides of the river. With around 160,000 inhabitants, Arnhem is a medium-sized city that combines urban facilities with lots of space and greenery. This makes it an attractive place to rent a home for students, starters, families and expats alike.

If you are looking for a rental property in Arnhem, Huurzone helps you gain a clear overview of what is currently available. We collect the latest rental listings from many different providers and present them in one convenient overview. Whether you are looking for a compact studio near the station, a family home in a green neighbourhood or a spacious apartment with a balcony close to the centre, you can use Huurzone to quickly explore the options and respond directly to the original advertiser.

Rental Homes Arnhem

Arnhem started out as a settlement at the point where the road between Nijmegen and Utrecht/Zutphen split. The settlement received city rights in 1233 from Count Otto II of Gelre. Only in 1530 did Arnhem actually reach the Rijn, after residents changed the river's course. From the sixteenth century onwards, Arnhem was considered the capital of Gelre thanks to the location of the treasury and the court of law, although this status was only formally confirmed in the nineteenth century.

During the Second World War the city became world famous because of the Battle of Arnhem in 1944, an Allied airborne operation. Large parts of the city were destroyed by bombardments from both the Allies and the Germans. After the war many neighbourhoods in and around Arnhem were rebuilt, and the damaged tram network was replaced by today's trolleybus system, unique in the Netherlands. Modern Arnhem therefore combines historic districts and post-war neighbourhoods with newer residential areas, so you will find a wide variety of rental homes: characteristic upstairs apartments, spacious 1930s houses, post-war gallery flats and recent new-build homes in mixed residential areas.

Because of this varied history, every district has its own look and feel. Around the centre and in areas such as Sonsbeek and Alteveer you will find older buildings with character, while districts like Presikhaaf, Rijkerswoerd or Schuytgraaf offer more modern apartments and family houses. When you rent in Arnhem, you can therefore really choose a neighbourhood that fits your lifestyle: lively and central, or green and quiet.

Sights in Arnhem

Anyone wanting to explore Arnhem and its surroundings has plenty of choice. The city has a rich (war-time) history with many visible traces in the streetscape. In the city centre you will find Airborneplein with a monument commemorating the Battle of Arnhem. If you want to dive deeper into this piece of history, you can visit the Airborne Museum in nearby Oosterbeek. The museum is located in the former headquarters of the British troops and displays an extensive collection of weapons, uniforms, photos and personal stories. Since 2008 the Airborne Experience has allowed visitors to experience the battle from a soldier’s perspective.

Opposite the John Frost Bridge, on the Rijnkade, you will find the information centre "Airborne at the Bridge". Here you can freely learn more about what happened around the bridge and in the city during the battle. Together these locations make Arnhem one of the most interesting places in the Netherlands for people who are fascinated by the Second World War and modern history.

Another popular outing in Arnhem is a visit to Burgers' Zoo. The zoo is known for its ecodisplays, where animals and plants are presented in large covered landscapes. In Burgers’ Bush you walk through a subtropical rainforest with free-flying birds and small mammals. Elsewhere in the park you can experience a desert, mangrove forest and ocean environment. Because many parts of the zoo are indoors, it is a great destination in bad weather as well.

Of course Arnhem is also simply a fun city to spend time in. The compact historic centre has plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants. Fashion lovers can explore the Modekwartier in the Klarendal district, where you will find studios, boutiques and small galleries. On and around the Korenmarkt and Jansplaats there are many terraces and nightlife venues, and throughout the year there are events and festivals that give the city an extra lively atmosphere.

If you are looking for peace and greenery, you never have to go far in Arnhem. The city borders the beautiful nature of the Veluwe. From Arnhem you can easily visit the national parks De Hoge Veluwe and Veluwezoom, where you can walk, cycle or ride horses through a landscape of forests, heathlands and sand drifts. Closer to home, parks such as Sonsbeek, Zypendaal and Meinerswijk offer plenty of space for running, picnicking or just sitting in the sun.

Why rent in Arnhem?

There are many reasons to rent a home in Arnhem. A first important advantage is the green character of the city. Arnhem ranks high in lists of the greenest cities in the Netherlands: around a third of public space consists of parks, forests and other greenery. Streams and small rivers run through the city, and from many neighbourhoods you can walk straight into nature. If you enjoy walking, cycling or relaxing in the park, you will quickly feel at home here.

Secondly, Arnhem is an important transport hub. The city is connected to the rest of the country via several provincial roads, national roads and motorways, which makes commuting by car relatively easy. Arnhem has four train stations and is connected to the NS night network. From Arnhem Central you can travel directly to cities such as Utrecht, Nijmegen, Zwolle and the Randstad. Thanks to its eastern location, it is also easy to continue your train journey to Germany, for example to Duisburg or Düsseldorf. So if you choose to live in Arnhem but work elsewhere, there are more than enough transport options.

Education is another strong point of Arnhem. The city plays an important role within the province when it comes to education. The Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences (HAN) is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, and ArtEZ University of the Arts has several locations in the city. Around eleven thousand students live and study in Arnhem, which creates a lively, but still relatively small-scale, student atmosphere. There are various study and student associations that organise social and cultural activities throughout the year.

Daily amenities are well arranged. You will find multiple shopping centres, supermarkets, sports clubs, gyms and healthcare facilities spread across the city, so you rarely have to travel far for everyday errands. For families there is a wide choice of primary and secondary schools, childcare and sports associations. As a tenant you therefore benefit from all the conveniences of a city, while the scale of Arnhem remains manageable and pleasant.

How do I rent a property in Arnhem?

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to consider Arnhem as your new home base. But how do you find the right rental property in practice? The first step is to think about what is important to you. Do you want to live in the lively city centre, on the edge of the city near nature, or just outside Arnhem in one of the surrounding villages? Are you looking for a studio, apartment, family home or shared house? And what is your maximum monthly rent?

It also helps to consider practical matters in advance. For example:

  • Do you prefer a furnished, semi-furnished or unfurnished property?
  • Is outside space such as a garden, balcony or roof terrace a must?
  • How quickly do you want to move in, and for how long do you want to rent?
  • Do you need private bathroom and kitchen facilities, or are you willing to share them, for example in a student house?
  • Is it important that you can park easily, or that the property is close to a station or bus stop?

On Huurzone you can use these preferences to filter the offer. We bring together the most recent rental listings in Arnhem every day so that you get a complete overview of what is currently available. With a free account you can save your search profile and set up alerts. As soon as a new property is listed that matches your criteria, you will receive a notification. You then respond directly to the original provider or letting agent; Huurzone itself is not the landlord, but a search platform that helps you find and compare the supply.

By combining a clear idea of your wishes with the overview on Huurzone, you increase the chance of finding a rental home in Arnhem that really suits you – whether you are a student, starter, family, expat or senior.
